For today's Curio Spotlight Series, we talked with interior designer Cortney McClure about how she approaches new designs, what she wishes was different about the industry, and how she uses vintage rugs in her design process. She incorporates her years working in corporate into her designs, and the results are not what you'd expect! Cortney's heart and creativity are evident in every one of her spaces.

Tell us your story! How did you get started in design? How long have you been in the industry?

I started in design about a decade ago, initially as a creative outlet and a way to help friends and family with their homes. It was when I designed my own new home that it became apparent that it’s my passion, and I decided to turn it into a career. Since then, I’ve worked on a wide variety of projects, ranging from cozy family homes to larger, more complex renovations and new builds.

How would you describe your design style?

I have a modern traditional style, where I blend classic elements with contemporary touches. I also love incorporating vintage pieces alongside new ones to give each space character and a sense of history.

Can you speak about your time in corporate and how you draw on that experience to incorporate it into your design work?

My corporate experience has been invaluable for my design work. It taught me the importance of organization, clear communication, and managing client expectations. I also learned a lot about project management, which helps me keep projects on track and within budget.

What is your favorite part of the design process? What is your favorite room in the house to design?

My favorite part of the design process is the conceptual phase—translating clients’ ideas and inspirations into a tangible plan. As for rooms, I love designing living rooms because they’re the heart of the home and where people spend most of their time.

Let's talk about rugs! How do you go about choosing a rug for a design? Do you start with the rug or add it after the design is complete? How do you decide between vintage and modern rugs for a space?

Rugs are essential for grounding a space, so I often start with them as a foundation piece. I decide between vintage and modern rugs based on the overall aesthetic and the character I want the room to have. Vintage rugs add warmth and history, while modern rugs can be the perfect fit for a cleaner, minimalist look.

What is a rule that you find yourself breaking?

I often break the “rule” that everything has to match. I love mixing styles, colors, and textures to create a layered, unique look.

What is your favorite space you have ever designed?

One of my favorites is a project called Philson Hollow. [Photo above.] The space is filled with pieces from my clients’ travels. It’s a special project to me because a lot of the scope was getting creative with weaving in their existing treasures to a more updated overall vibe.

Is there anything about the design industry you wish was different?

I wish the industry would place more emphasis on sustainability. There’s so much waste in design, and I’d love to see more eco-friendly practices become the norm. Shopping second hand and at antique stores is one way I like to contribute to that cause.

What are your hobbies outside of design?

If I’m not working, you’ll find me cruising our property with my family and a glass of my favorite wine in my hand. I love to unwind at home and just be with the people I love most.
